From across the Elbe

29 12 2008

They call Dresden “Florence on the Elbe” but I have no idea why.  It’s much nicer than Florence.  It’s more picturesque, the people are friendlier, and it’s cheaper.  It’s also easier to find parking.

If they improved the food a bit then I’d never need to go to Italy again.

Go to the Pumphouse

23 12 2008

The Pumphouse Bar in Darling Harbour in Sydney is a must see. It was built in 1890 as a pumping station before electricity was used in Sydney.

The Pumphouse was in use in one form or another until 1975. The building was saved from demolition by the Heritage Council of NSW and was restored to become the Pumphouse Tavern.

They have their own local brew and more than 60 other beers from around Australia and the world.

Is that an alp in your pocket?

21 12 2008

Nary an hour from here, the foothills of the alps make a good subject. It’s almost like they take the picture for you. Why are we leaving here again…?

Tuscany is pretty nice

19 12 2008

Italy rocks. Anywhere that you randomly decide to stop is decidedly more picturesque than anywhere you might randomly stop in, say, Nebraska.

San Francisco at night

We still haven’t left. So here’s one from earlier this year.

A Temple in Chiang Mai

15 12 2008

It’s funny how a stand of local kitsch is so much better in a foreign land. If this stand was in downtown Munich and had a bunch of German stuff on it, I wouldn’t look twice at it. But here in Thailand it’s exotic and interesting!

The beginning

14 12 2008

So… everything starts somewhere and here’s where we’ll begin.  We’ve given notice at our jobs and will be heading off at the end of January to the warm waters of Koh Tao, Thailand and then onward to Australia to basically drive around and check the place out.

Departure is still over a month away so this is really a test post and a way to say, welcome!

We haven’t gone anywhere yet.  Thus, we can currently be found here:
