The lighthouse on Cape Byron is the most easterly and most powerful lighthouse in Australia. You can walk up a nice track that’s bloody long and bloody steep.

This is the most easterly point in Australia.  It’s like, how much more east could this be? And the answer is none. None more east. -jp

Cape Byron

Gestern haben wir auch mal wieder was für unsere Fitness getan und sind zum Leuchtturm gelaufen. Superschöner Weg entlang am Strand, durch den Regenwald und dann diese wahnsinnig tolle Aussicht auf’s Meer hinaus.

Auf unserem Weg dahin sind wir am östlichsten Punkt des australischen Festlandes vorbeigekommen. Da geht’s nicht mehr weiter, nicht mehr weiter Ost! …Justin sein Eintrag hat übrigens irgendwas mit nem Spruch aus dem Film “Spinal Tap” zu tun. Wer das nachschauen möchte, viel Spaß, ansonsten ist es nur witzig für englischsprachige Leute glaub ich, denn “None more east” kann man auf Englisch wohl so gar nicht sagen – total falsches Englisch also – auch ok… -mk

This was almost the most easterly tip of Australia but Google Maps has let us down.

We’ve decided to spend a few days in Byron Bay.  Everyone tells us we need to dive here and so we will.  The plan is to look around the area for a few days and enjoy the much improved weather to give the water a little time to clear up.

There’s a big hippy lifestyle sort of thing going on here.  Like Berkeley by the sea or something. -jp

Byron Bay, was für eine geile Hippiestadt! Total relaxt, entspannt, gemütlich, was soll ich sagen!? Cooler Strand, coole Cafes/Restaurants, coole Shops und Samstag gehts endlich wieder zum tauchen – jaaa!!! -mk

So the weather won.  We gave up on Port Macquarie, gave up on diving South West Rocks, gave up on Coffs Harbour.  Much of this was because these towns aren’t reachable anymore.  In fact, we decided just to skip up to Byron Bay where the weather is nice but the highway between us and Byron is closed due to flooding.  And it’ll be closed for awhile.  Entire towns are underwater.

The information center told us we’d have to go to Newcastle and up the New England Highway.  We didn’t really want to do that so we took some random back roads until we found a road that we wanted.  Turns out it was closed, too.

We figured we’d go and see why it was closed.  We drove for quite awhile and saw a lot of mess caused by the flooding.  But the reason for the road closure was a flooded bridge.  It was only about 40 cm flooded and the river was flowing pretty fast but, honestly, with a standard car and some balls you’d have no trouble getting over it.

And over it we went.  Up the road (Thunderbolts Way… what a fantastic name) there was a landslide we drove over, some huge rocks in the middle of the road, and some trees we had to drive around.  Really, it was closed for a pretty good reason.  But a little desire and gumption was all you’d need to get through it.  That said, I wouldn’t have been excited about the same road in the dark.

We spent the night in Armidale.  Man, it was cold.  The next day we drove all day and reached Lennox Head after dark and set up camp.  So basically it took us two days to take a detour from a 5 hour drive.  And that’s with the time saved by not going to Newcastle.  Ay caramba. -jp

Wir geben auf!

Am Sonntag gings dann endlich weiter mit der Aussicht auf besseres Wetter Richtung Norden. Nur erstmal mußten wir die Überschwemmungsgebiete überwinden, was sich als gar nicht einfach herausgestellt hat. Eigentlich wäre es einfach nur auf dem Pacific Highway immer am Meer entlang gewesen, doch warum einfach, wenns auch kompliziert geht!? 

Wir hängen Euch ne Karte dran, dann könnt ihr sehen, welchen “kleinen” Umbogen wir in Kauf nehmen mußten. Aber zum Glück besteht unser Ziel ja aus dem Weg den wir nehmen und daraus was wir dabei alles erleben, sehen und entdecken! Es war witzig, auf über eigentlich gesperrt Straßen mit umgefallenen Bäumen, Schlammlavinen und überfluteten Straßen. Doch bei Tageslicht alles halb so schlimm Mutti, keine Angst!

Einen Zwischenstop in Armidale in 1300m Höhe mußten wir machen, was sich beim campen dann als recht kühl herausgestellt hat. Am nächsten Morgen ging’s gleich früh weiter nach Ballina/Lennox Head. Oh, natürlich nicht ohne Frühstück, was ich kurz erwähnen möchte, wir ab und zu bei McDonalds einnehmen und ich möchte betonen, das McCafe mit seinem Cappuccino und seinem Schokocroissant doch auch kleine Monquis von McDonalds überzeugen kann! Naja, wie auch immer, diese Tour hat uns leider auch den ganzen Tag gekostet, d.h. wir haben für eine eigentlich 5 Stunden Tour 2 Tage gebraucht. Was soll’s, schön war’s doch! -mk

Port Macquarie is the second oldest settlement in Australia behind Sydney.  It was originally built by convicts which they are very proud of.  Funny thing about Australians… if you can’t trace a convict back in your family tree then you’re a second rate citizen.

Modern Port Macquarie is a cute little brick town with dolphins in the bay and a fish and chips shop on every corner.

Port Macquarie ist nach Sydney die zweitälteste Siedlung Australien. Es wurde ursprünglich von Gefangenen erbaut, worauf sie recht stolz sind. Diese Australier…hat jemand keinen Gefangenen in seinem Stammbaum, so ist er Einwohner zweiter Klasse – haha. Das moderne Port Macquarie ist ein süße kleine Stadt wo man Delphine sehen kann, einfach nur beim laufen entlang des Piers.

Wie wir ja geschrieben hatten, wurde das Wetter immer schlimmer und letztendlich haben wir uns in ein Hotel verzogen, welches echt toll war! Ach war das schön…

So ein Schmarn! Wir sitzen bei McDonalds in Port Macquarie um dem schlechten Wetter draußen zu entgehen. Wenn es so weitergeht, müssen wir wohl den Rest der Küste bis Cairns etwas schneller hinter uns bringen, damit wir uns endlich wieder von der Sonne verwöhnen lassen können und ganz wichtig, endlich wieder tauchen gehen können!

Ab Morgen sind wir für 3 Tage in einem Hotel hier in Port Macquarie eingebucht und hoffen darauf ab Sonntag besseres Wetter zu haben. Naja, d.h. Fitness Studio, Schwimmbad, ein wenig studieren, Badewanne – also alles was man sich so wünschen kann bei regnerischem Wetter draußen. Das ist auch nicht das Schlimmste was einem passieren kann, passt nur nicht wirklich in unsere Pläne mit campen! Montag und Dienstag probieren wir’s nochmal mit tauchen in South West Rocks und wenn’s dann nicht besser wird, geht’s in großen Schritten nach Cairns, wo der Sommer auf uns wartet! -mk

Bad news… we’ve been hit with bad weather.  We’re in McDonald’s in Prot Macquarie using their slow but free wi-fi connection and looking at the gail force winds and driving rain out the window.  It’ll hopefully get bettwe by Monday so that we can go diving at South West Rocks.  We’ll be in a hotel (ZOMG a hotel!) from tomorrow until then so we can wait it out there while using the facilities like the gym and pool and laundry.

The plan after that is South West Rocks, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Brisbane.  If the weather doesn’t get better then we may give some of that a miss and just go until we find good weather and then hit the missed places up again at the end of the trip since we’re still only about 5 hours north of Sydney.

The good news is, it’s still better weather than it would be in autumn in Germany so at least there’s that.

So yes, it’s getting towards winter.  And yes, it’s on the coast.  And yes, it isn’t Thailand.  But still… we thought it would be a little warmer than this.  I didn’t even wear my sunglasses today.  Heck, I didn’t even have them in my bag.

It’s about 18C and it even rained this morning.  RAINED!  Can you believe that?  Granted, it actually stopped raining any time that we were outside so we didn’t actually get wet but nonetheless, if this keeps up we’re going to have to buy an umbrella. -jp

Ja, apropos Regenschirm, Justin weigert sich kontinuierlich nen Regenschirm zu kaufen. Naja und so enden wir halt immer naß. Außer heute, da hatten wir irgendwie immer das Glück, dass es gerade dann regnet, wenn wir irgendwo drin waren – glück gehabt. Aber das soll eigentlich nicht heißen, dass es hier immer regnet! Eigentlich ist es der 1. Tag seitdem wir Sydney verlassen haben an dem es regnet. Dennoch ist es kälter als wir erwartet hatten und wir halten uns bekannterweise den ganzen Tag im Freien auf, was den Thailand verwöhnten Körper auch bei 18 Grad auskühlen läßt. Doch wie meinte eine netten Dame von vorhin, es sind bereits Temperaturen wie im Winter und naja, wenn das Winter ist, dann könnten wir glatt ganz gut damit umgehen! Dennoch freuen wir uns Richtung Norden zu gehen, wo die warem Temparaturen auf uns warten! -mk
