Katherine Gorge, just out side of Katherine, is another National Park area we wanted to check out. We decided that all the dry pasta and tent sleeping had saved us enough money that we could splurge on a tour. We did a boat cruise tour of 3 of the gorges and then a helicopter tour over another 8. That was an extravagance which was totally worth it.
There are freshwater crocodiles but we didn’t see any. No salties here. During the wet season the water rises halfway up the cliff walls (the cliffs are over 60 meters in some places… cliff jumping is a one way trip) and a few years ago it actually flooded over the top. The water moves at such a speed that the trees under the wet season level are all bent over due to the force.
The town of Katherine lies downstream and was flooded to 3 meters in the year the Gorge broke its banks. Saltwater crocs moved in and one found his way to the meat section of Woolworth. Some of the locals broke into the liquor store next door where they were promptly trapped by the croc and had to call the police to rescue them.
Sometimes during the wet season salties move in. The park people do their best to clear them out and they leave traps for the ones that linger behind. Apparently they’ve only trapped 4 in the last 15 years. Those are good odds for all the kayakers then… -jp
Es stand eigentlich gar nicht auf unserem Plan, dann laßen wir jedoch im Reiseführer von Katherine und dem dazugehörigen Katherine Gorge.
Da unser 2jähriges kurz zuvor stand und wir die vorhergehenden Wochen nur von Pasta und teilweise wild camping gelebt hatten, haben wir uns dafür entschieden uns mal wieder etwas zu gönnen und haben 2 Touren unternommen. Die erste Tour am Morgen ging es mit dem Boot 4 Stunden durch die Gorges von einem Pool zum anderen. Insgesamt bestand die Tour aus 3 Gorges, bei jedem mußten wir aussteigen und zum nächsten Pool laufen, da zwischendrin felsige Teile waren, die nicht geflutet waren.
Die Gorges haben sich ihren Weg durch die Felsen gefressen und dabei unglaublich schöne Schluchten und Pools hinterlassen haben. Da wir in der Trockenzeit hier sind, sind diese weniger voll mit Wasser, jedoch in der Regenzeit steigt der Wasserspiegel um 10-15 Meter an und wird zu einem reizenden Fluß. Vor ein paar Jahren sind diese sogar komplett geflutet und haben die anliegende Stadt Katherine überflutet, wobei sich auch ein netten Salzwasserkrokodil in die Stadt verirrt hatte. Und wo haben sie es gefunden!? Im Woolworth in der Fleischabteilung – uhhh!! Normalerweise gibt es da keine Salzwasserkrokodile, sondern nur die kleineren Süßwasserkrokodile, doch durch die Flut hatten die Kerle keine Probleme aus den nahegelegenen Gebieten dahin zu kommen.
Die 2 Tour des Tages war ein Helicoptertrip, wo wir uns das ganzen Spektakel nochmal von oben angeschaut haben. Das war schon eine eigene Erfahrung und ich hab es wirklich sehr genossen:-) -mk
