We decided to get our wine on.  We went to Napa and drove up the Silverado Trail, which I probably haven’t done in 10-15 years, and hit up a couple of wineries along the way.  Since when did they all start charging for tastings?  I remember in the olden days blah blah blah…

Napa ist die bekannte Weingegend in Kalifornien. Eine wirklich sehr schöne Weingegend, doch was wir als ziemlich krass empfunden haben, die wollen sogar für’s Wein testen nicht unerheblich viel Geld haben – unglaublich! Bei einem der Weingüter brauchte man sogar ne Voranmeldung, sonst ging überhaupt nix – also Napa, dann fahr ich doch lieber in die Toskana!

We returned to San Francisco with my parents to go to the Saturday morning markets at the ferry terminal and then to cruise around afterwards.  The Saturday markets were good stuff.  Farmers and growers from all over the farming areas of Northern California set up stands all the way around the ferry building and sell their fruits, vegetables, condiments, flowers, honey, and whatever else.  There were cooked food stalls and buskers and everything else a good market should have. Afterwards, we took the scenic route through the downtown are up around the Marina area to the Golden Gate Bridge. Photo ops were limited due to some brutal fog rolling in.

We continued on past the expensive neighborhoods to Tiburon and had a tasty lunch at Sam’s, a waterfront bar and grill that my parents and I have been going to since we first found it in 1982.  Mmmm… tasty.  After lunch we watched the US drop out of the World Cup and then went back to SF by ferry.  We wandered around Fisherman’s Wharf for awhile then took another ferry to Oakland and had dinner at Yoshi’s. Maaaaan, I miss good, cheap sushi. -jp

Ein wunderschöner Samstag in San Francisco. Angefangen mit Farmersmarkt am Fährterminal und Mittagessen im Sam’s Anchor Cafe in Tiburon, wo Justin und seine Eltern schon seit Ewigkeiten speisen und es immer wahnsinnig lecker ist. Nach dem Mittagessen sind wir dort noch ein wenig spazieren und danach mit der Fähre zurück nach SF, vorbei an Alcatraz und ab zum Pier 39 wo ganz viele knuddelige Robben auf uns warteten.

Die Fotos von der Golden Gate Bridge sind leider nicht so gut geworden, da der Nebel kurz vorher reinzog und ganz dick hängen blieb. -mk

After a couple of nice days hanging out with my parents we finally meandered into San Francisco.  We met up with my buddy Alex who proceeded to march us through the worst part of SF.  Which wasn’t bad.  Parts of Berlin are probably worse.

We mostly just wandered around trying to keep away from the encroaching fog, down around the ballpark and up the Embarcadero to the ferry terminal.  If you’re there, go to the ferry terminal building and have a cone of meat from Boccalone. -jp

Angekommen in San Francisco haben wir erstmal ein paar Tage mit Justin’s Eltern verbracht, sind dann jedoch endlich mal in die pulsierende Innenstadt gefahren. Alex, ein Kumpel von Justin hat sich dann dazu bereit erklärt uns mal durch die Stadt zu führen und fing erstmal mit dem schlimmsten Stadtteil von SF an. Ich muss jedoch sagen, so schlimm war der Stadtteil bei Weitem nicht…eigentlich hat es nur bisserl nach Pipi gestunken, ABER niemand wurde gekillt, wie es gleich jeder in den USA erwartet!!

SF ist wirklich eine schöne Stadt, mit einem tollen Fährterminal und vielen tollen Victoria’s Secrets – hihi! -mk

Okay so it has been over a month since we had an entry. There hasn’t been anything to report, really. Just winter and work. But now we’re on vacation! So we had a 12 hour layover to kill in Auckland, New Zealand, and we used the time to look around.

We took a Hop On-Hop Off tour of the main part of the city and went to the Auckland

War Memorial Museum.  Great museum.  we spent 3 hours there and could easily have stayed longer.  After finishing the tour we still had some time to kill so we wandered around town a little before heading back to the airport.  We’re definitely going to have to go back. -jp

In Auckland hatten wir einen 12-stündigen Aufenthalt bis zu unserem Weiterflug nach San Francisco zu überbrücken, welchen wir natürlich ordentlich genutzt haben und uns das War Memorial Museum angeschaut haben sowie eine Hop On-Hop Off Stadtrundfahrt in Auckland gemacht haben. Leider ist auf der südlichen Erdhalbkugel gerade Winter, dementsprechend war das Wetter auch eher regnerisch und kalt an dem Tag, jedoch scheint es sich zu lohnen zurückzukommen und sich das Ganze mal im Sommer anzuschauen. -mk

Our stuff finally came from Germany. The cool thing about our view is it includes the shipping harbor. That means we were able to see our ship come in. Our stuff was

sprayed with agent orange or something by Customs and Quarantine and then it made its way over to us. Our friend Giovanni helped us move it up the stairs.

And now, thanks to Monique’s tenacious tidying regime, it looks like we’ve been there for years. -jp

Endlich – unser Container kommt 6 Wochen nach der Abholung in Deutschland in unserem Hafen in Fremantle an. Das Coole daran, wir konnten das Containerschiff von unserem Balkon aus sehen, was es umso spannender machte für uns.

Unser italienischer Kumpel Giovanni hat uns geholfen die 15qm Containerinhalt in unsere Wohnung im 3. Stock zu verfrachten und die Wohnung wurde immer voller und voller! Nach ein paar Tagen sortieren und einräumen haben wir die Sachen schließlich auch in unserer Wohnung untergebracht und Justin hat endlich seine Musikinstrumente und Stereoanlage wieder und ich meinen Staubsauger;-) -mk

Am verlängerten WE vom ANZAC day (AustralianNewZealandArmyCorps), das ist ein Gedenktag an die Gefallenen aus den Kriegen, waren wir mal wieder im Margaret River Weingebiet.

Wir haben unser Campingzeug gepackt und sind auf zum wild campen, was immer ein Spaß ist in Australien, mit Lagerfeuer und Co. Wein haben wir in der Weingegend selbstverständlich auch getestet und uns die Stadt Margaret River direkt angeschaut. -mk

135,000 people showed up today for the race and still the area down near the improvised air strip was almost empty.  However, the other areas they were stacked 10 deep.  Go figure.

Australian Matt Hall came second in the race.  In between races there were a few shows like a Qantas flyover, an old school jet fighter of some sort making flybys and doing tricks, the RAAF precision flying team, and a few other plane related shows.  The weather was perfect and the Vietnamese dinner afterwards capped off a great day.  Yum! -jp

Am Sonntag war ich dann schließlich auch mit auf dem Red Bull Air Race, bei wunderschönem Wetter mit meinem lieben Verlobten und einem italienischen Freund. Schaut euch einfach die Fotos an und freut euch daran. -mk

Monique had to work today so I went into town and watched the qualifications for the air races.  There were a ton of people along the riverfront right near where the train station and the ferry terminal is, but the crowd thinned out the further down the river you went.  In fact, if you went all the way down to Langley Park where the temporary airfield was set up, it was almost empty despite being the best place to stand on the north side of the river.  I guess most people have a general aversion to walking.

After watching for awhile I figured out what most people probably already know: these pilots are nuts. -jp

The Red Bull Air Race has returned to Perth after skipping a year and the day before the race they’ve started practicing.  I’ve actually been looking forward to this for quite some time and when the weather was bad at the beginning of the week I was worried they’d cancel it.  And then yesterday a guy crashed during testing.  But things are looking up.  The weather is clearing and the guy who crashed is fine.

I was able to see the warm-ups from out my window at work.  That was pretty distracting -jp

While we were in the Outback last year, one of the things that I wanted to do was go drinking at a feral Outback bar with the local ranchers and truckers and whoever else.  Needless to say, Monique didn’t want any part of that.  I didn’t want to go by myself so it didn’t happen.  But fast forward to Easter 2010 and the Quindanning Picnic Races.  We drove out to where the bush ends and the Outback begins to a little boonies town that has an Easter tradition of getting all of the locals together in a field next to a horse racetrack and getting them smashed.  There were a couple of bands and an endless amount of relatively cheap booze as well as plenty of drunk hicks.  They called us “city people.”  I thought that was funny.

Apparently, there was some horse racing.  Or at least that’s what my camera tells me.

On the way home we hid Easter baskets but my head hurt. -jp

An Ostern hat es uns nach Quidanning  verschlagen. Einem kleinen Städtchen irgendwo im nirgendwo zwischen australischem Busch und Outback. Warum wir da waren? Ja, eine gute Freundin von uns, von Beruf Tierärztin hatte Bereitschaft auf der Pferderennbahn des Örtchens. So kam es, das die “Stadtmenschen”, wie sie uns nannten auf’s Land hinaus sind und ein bisschen den Pferden gelauscht und mit den Ansässigen getrunken haben. Es war nett! Ja wirklich! Nicht wirklich viel Pferderennen – leider, aber trotzdem witzig mit dem ein oder anderen aus der Gegend zu quatschen und zu sehen, wie verbunden doch die Australier zu Natur und Tier sind!

Und auf dem Weg nach Hause haben wir in Pinjarra angehalten und im Park unsere Ostereier gesucht.
