Chiang Mai Christmas

24 12 2010

In strange parts of the world (Europe), Christmas is the 24th.  This is probably handy for Santa because then he can split up the trip across two days.  It’s probably really handy for the Dutch Santa whose helper, Zwarte Piet, throws bad kids in a bag and beats them with a stick.  I imagine that would be very time consuming, especially in 2010. There’s an awful lot of bad kids out there.  Anyway, we decided to have Xmas on the 24th, which made Monique happy, and went to this really pimp hotel on the river called The Chedi for dinner.  The food was fantastic.

On the 25th we went to the cooking school and learned to make some killer Thai food (Monique did well but my fish cakes looked like little turds… they tasted good though) and then ate it all.  I don’t think we bothered with dinner that night.  Did you notice I didn’t mention presents?  That’s because we didn’t get around to opening them until the 26th.  My mom made out like a bandit. -jp

-mk

Chiang Mai

22 12 2010

I like Chiang Mai.  It’s like Bangkok but smaller and without the bullshit.  We met up with my parents which was nice and the first order of business was to hit up the tasty sushi at Fuji.  It sort of shocks me that in all of Perth there isn’t a single good sushi restaurant.  Eh, that’s probably the best for the environment, honestly.

While we were in Chiang Mai we went and checked out some local places like the flower market and the night market. We also went out to a village that did nothing else but sell plants and flowers.  An entire village. So we bought some really nice orchids for like $5 for the lot.  They were all much nicer than the two we have in Perth, for which we paid $25 per each.  We also went to the golf course my parents are members of.  Nice place. -jp

-mk

A Temple in Chiang Mai

15 12 2008

It’s funny how a stand of local kitsch is so much better in a foreign land. If this stand was in downtown Munich and had a bunch of German stuff on it, I wouldn’t look twice at it. But here in Thailand it’s exotic and interesting!
