If you go to Hillarys in Western Australia (nice place), please avoid Sharky’s. They serve shark. They don’t even try to camouflage it by calling it “flake” like other places here. It’s just a plate of bronze whaler and fries. So yeah, add that to the “avoid” list.

First the bad news. The mantas no-showed. However, the diving was great and we got good grey nurse shark photos this time. The town itself is more of an outpost for diving and snorkeling. There’s only one street and it’s not very long. There’s only one dive shop but they’re very good.
If you go to the town beach and walk far enough you’ll come across Skeleton Bay. It’s a reef shark nursery which you’re not allowed to swim in, dammit. I went there and stood in knee deep water for 45 minutes trying to get them to come closer but I couldn’t get them closer than about 2 meters. -jp
In Coral Bay hatten wir eine Schnorcheltour mit den Mantas und 2 Tauchgänge gebucht. Was ich vorher nicht wußte, die Mantas werden nicht garantiert. Hm, so ein Mist und so kam es dann wirklich, dass wir keine Manta Rochen gesehen haben. Da waren wir echt traurig! Jeder Taucher will einmal im Leben mit Manta Rochen getaucht sein! Naja, wie auch immer, Natur ist Natur… Trotzallem hatten wir 2 super coole Tauchgänge, denn wir haben beim 1. Tauchgang gleich 5 oder 6 Blaupunktrochen gesehen, die um uns herumgeschwommen sind und sich teilweise von Putzerfischen haben putzen lassen. Und beim 2. Tauchgang sind wir an dem zu Hause der sogenannten Matilda vorbeigetaucht. Sie ist ein ca. 2 m großer Grey Nurse Shark. Keine Angst Mutti, die sehen nur gruselig aus! Haben tolle Fotos von ihr und sogar ein Video. -mk

The first croc we saw in the wild without being on a tour. Sucks to be that fish.
We like sharks and we like crocodiles. Too bad if you tried diving with crocs you’d die a miserable death. At least you can dive with sharks. Anyway, apex predators are an important part of nature’s food chain and removing crocs and killing sharks stuffs that all up.
For example, if you take the sharks out of the equation, then you’ll end up with a huge drop in in things like bay scallops, because the resulting fish overpopulation would eat the scallops, and more importantly, the plankton levels would drop. And where do you think we get the majority of the oxygen found in the air? -jp
Should you find yourself in North Lakes which is north of Brisbane, please don’t go to the Coles there. They sell oceanic black tip shark at their fish counter.
Please don’t patronize restaurants or shops that sell shark products or shark fin soup. Shark populations have been decimated by overfishing and a low reproductive rate. And if you know anyone who “sport” fishes sharks, tell them they’re an asshole and should stick to trevally.

Wir dachten, wir trauen unseren Augen nicht recht, da verkaufen die doch tatsächlich Black Tip Shark Fillets im Coles in North Lakes. Wir haben uns natürlich strickt geweigert da noch etwas zu kaufen, da die Zahl der Haie ja immer stätig zurück geht und wir dies nicht auch noch unterstützten indem wir da einkaufen gehen. Bitte tut dem Gleich und schaut, dass ihr nicht ausversehen Haiprodukte kauft oder gar beim Chinesen Haifischflossensuppe eßt!! -mk
