Coral Bay
28 10 2009

The critically endangered grey nurse shark. And the best underwater photo I've ever taken. Please click it for the big version.
First the bad news. The mantas no-showed. However, the diving was great and we got good grey nurse shark photos this time. The town itself is more of an outpost for diving and snorkeling. There’s only one street and it’s not very long. There’s only one dive shop but they’re very good.
If you go to the town beach and walk far enough you’ll come across Skeleton Bay. It’s a reef shark nursery which you’re not allowed to swim in, dammit. I went there and stood in knee deep water for 45 minutes trying to get them to come closer but I couldn’t get them closer than about 2 meters. -jp
-mk

The Navy Pier
24 10 2009
Finally! Grey nurse sharks! Finally! Too bad the visibility was not so good. Bad viz + dark = bad photos. At least we have some of Monique’s very good nudibranch photos to fall back on. Honestly, it was just really exciting just to see the critically endangered grey nurses.
Oh yeah, history. The Navy Pier was originally (and is still occasionally) used to unload the diesel needed to power the huge communications system at the navy base in Exmouth. It puts out enough power to provide electricity to every home in Western Australia. -jp
-mk

See the Navy Pier from above on Google Maps. Scroll out and to the left to see the huge antenna array.

Back in the water… Lighthouse Bay
23 10 2009We finally got back in the water and man, it was cold. 23C. But it was a nice day with three dives at the north horn of the Exmouth Peninsula. We saw different sea snakes than usual, different nudibranchs, and a couple of sweet looking lionfish. Our old favorite, the white tip reef shark, was there as well as at least three turtles. All in all it was a good dive day.
The bay is the northern end of Ningaloo reef, the world’s largest fringing reef. -jp
Endlich wieder tauchen!
Alles in allem super schöne Tauchgänge. -mk

Mooloolaba (HMAS Brisbane) and Noosa
12 06 2009
We went to Mooloolaba so that I could dive (it was too cold for Monique) the HMAS Brisbane. Mooloolaba is a cute little town with a beachfront main drag of shops and cafes. But the main reason to go there is to dive the Brisbane. It’s a destroyer that was used in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars before being decommissioned in 2001 and sunk as an artificial reef in 2007. It’s already attracted fish and soft corals to it.
During the dive I saw little clown fish, a couple of octopi, some kingfish, a few porcupinefish, and a couple of other fish of note. The dive itself was around and over the outside for the first dive and then through the middle for the second. There were consoles and toilets and silos and cannon still in place. A very nice dive.
Unfortunately, I can’t show you any of this stuff because my camera stuffed up. In fact, the photo at the top is the only one I got before the camera decided not to cooperate anymore. How annoying.
After Mooloolaba we drove to Noosa which didn’t impress us at all. It was too expensive, too pretentious, and the pies tasted awful. Seriously. Worst pie EVER.
After a stroll around there for an hour or so we decided to leave the pomp and circumstance and go to Rainbow Beach to get ready to go to Fraser Island. On the way we got routed onto a 4wd track by the navigation system and passed some controlled burning. -jp
Gallery but no diving photos:

Julian Rocks – Byron Bay
31 05 2009
We finally got back in the water! Unfortunately, the water was still a mess from the storms the week before. It was extremely poor visibility and the water was green and soupy. And cold. 21C! But we saw some stuff we’ve never seen before. More wobbegong sharks than you could shake a stick at, a huge loggerhead turtle that must be approaching 100 years old if he isn’t already, and the friendliest porcupine fish ever.
Unfortunately, Monique only got to do one dive and I did two. We’ll try again at the tail end of our trip when we come back through Sydney. Then we can also dive South West Rocks which we also missed because it was completely cut off due to the flooding. -jp
Endlich wieder tauchen!
-mk
