Litchfield National Park

8 10 2009

Some people we talked to said Litchfield was better than Kakadu but I don’t agree.  The waterfalls were nice, sure, but the terrain wasn’t different than we’ve already seen in places like Cape York.  Really, it was just different than Kakadu.  It’s a shame because I was really expecting a lot more.

That said, the waterfalls were nice and it was good to be able to swim in the plunge pools without having to worry about getting eaten by a saltwater crocodile. -jp

-mk

Litchfield is an easy drive from Darwin, here.

Atherton Tablelands

6 08 2009

Barron Falls

We went to the Atherton Tablelands, which is southwest of Cairns, inland, for the day.  The towns along the way look like they stopped advancing in 1899.  Plenty of parks and windy roads and waterfalls.  In fact, the shot above is Barron Falls near Kuranda.  There was a huge Chinese population in Atherton at one time. There was even a Chinatown.  The last standing building is the old temple. -jp

Jahrhunderts. -mk

Girringun National Park – Wallaman Waterfall/Wasserfall

14 07 2009

Wallaman waterfall, just outside of Ingham in Girringun National Park – yet another of Australia’s great World Heritage Sites, is the highest single drop waterfall in Australia with 268 meters.  There’s a 1.6km round trip from the top to the bottom which is pretty strenuous.  I had my camera backpack and tripod on my back and it was pretty brutal.  But worth it.  When we were at the bottom, the morning sun hit the mist and caused a rainbow effect. -jp

-mk
